The whole process runs in your browser, so your document and password never leave your device, and it works offline after the first load.
How to use Unlock PDF
- Add your PDF — Drag a PDF onto the dropzone or click to choose a file. The tool checks whether it is encrypted or only restricted.
- Enter a password if needed — For restriction-only PDFs (printing or copying locked), leave the password field blank. For password-encrypted files, type the password you know.
- Unlock and download — Use the Unlock and download button in the header. The tool produces an unlocked copy named with an _unlocked suffix.
- Start another — Click + New PDF to clear the current file and unlock another one.
Frequently asked questions
Is my PDF or password uploaded anywhere?
No. The file is processed entirely in your browser, so the document and any password you enter stay on your device and never go to a server.
Can it open a PDF I don't have the password for?
No. This is not a password-cracking tool. It removes usage restrictions from PDFs that aren't password-protected, and for encrypted files it needs the correct open password.
What's the difference between a restricted and an encrypted PDF?
A restricted PDF opens freely but blocks actions like printing or copying. An encrypted PDF requires a password just to open it. The tool flags an encrypted file as Encrypted when you load it.
Why might the unlocked file look slightly different?
Restriction-only PDFs are saved with their content intact. For password-encrypted files, pages may be rebuilt as images to produce a readable copy, so selectable text can be lost.
What do I get back?
A new PDF with the same content but the restrictions removed, downloaded as a copy ending in _unlocked.pdf. Your original file is untouched.
Tips
- If your PDF only blocks printing or copying, leave the password field empty — no password is required.
- For encrypted files, the unlock works only when you enter the correct open password.
