Open Typing tutor →What is the typing tutor?
A free touch-typing trainer that times you on short passages and shows live words-per-minute, accuracy and a score as you type. It highlights every mistake and a colour-coded keyboard guides which finger to use next, across four difficulty levels. It runs entirely in your browser, works offline and remembers your best score on this device.
How to use Typing tutor
- Pick a level — Choose Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced or Expert. Each loads a different style of passage, from home-row drills to text with symbols and code.
- Start typing — Click the passage (or just begin typing) — the timer starts on your first keystroke. The current character is highlighted as you go.
- Watch the live stats — Your WPM, accuracy and score update as you type, while correct and incorrect characters are colour-coded in the passage.
- Finish and review — Complete the passage to see your results. A new best is flagged, then hit Try Again or Reset for a fresh passage.
Frequently asked questions
How is the score calculated?
The score combines your typing speed and accuracy — roughly your words per minute scaled by how accurately you typed — so being fast and clean both matter.
What's the finger-guide keyboard for?
It highlights the next key you need to press and names the finger to use, colour-coded by hand and finger, to help you build proper touch-typing habits. It's hidden on small screens.
Can I turn on key sounds?
Yes. Open Settings to switch on key sounds and pick a profile — mechanical keyboard, soft clicks or typewriter. Sounds are off by default.
Is my best score saved?
Yes, per level, in your browser's local storage on this device. There's no account, no leaderboard and nothing is uploaded — it all works offline.
Does it correct my mistakes for me?
No. Wrong characters are highlighted in red and count against your accuracy; you can press Backspace to fix them yourself before moving on.
Tips
- Start on Beginner to drill the home row, then move up a level once your accuracy is consistently high.
- Aim for accuracy first — a clean run scores better than a fast one full of mistakes.
- Use the finger-guide keyboard to learn which finger reaches each key instead of looking down.
- Press Reset any time for a fresh passage at the same level when you want more practice.
