A free, private voice recorder that runs entirely in your browser. Click record, speak into your microphone, and watch the live level meter and timer while you talk. You can pause and resume a take, play it back straight away, and download the finished audio file. The recording is captured on your device with the browser's built-in MediaRecorder — nothing is uploaded, no account is needed, and it works offline.
How to use Voice recorder
- Start recording — Click Start recording and allow microphone access when your browser asks. The level meter confirms your voice is being picked up.
- Pause and resume if needed — Use Pause to hold the take mid-thought and Resume to carry on — the timer keeps track of the recorded length.
- Stop and listen — Click Stop when you are done. The recording appears below with a player so you can check it immediately.
- Download the file — Click Download recording to save the audio to your device. Record again at any time to replace the take.
Frequently asked questions
Is my voice uploaded anywhere?
No. The microphone audio is captured and stored on your device only. The tool has no server and the recording never leaves your browser.
What format is the recording saved in?
The browser's native recording format — WebM (Opus) in Chrome, Edge and Firefox, or M4A on Safari. Use the Audio converter tool afterwards if you need MP3 or WAV.
Why can't the tool access my microphone?
Your browser needs permission to use the microphone. If you dismissed or blocked the prompt, click the padlock or site-settings icon in the address bar and allow microphone access, then try again.
Is there a time limit?
No fixed limit — recording is bounded only by your device's memory. Long sessions produce proportionally larger files.
Tips
- Watch the level meter while you speak — a flat line means the wrong microphone is selected in your system settings.
- Pause between sections instead of stopping — you get a single continuous file with no editing needed.
- For MP3 or WAV output, download the take and drop it into the Audio converter tool.
