Open Timeline maker →What is the timeline maker?
A tool for building one or more named, colour-coded tracks of events — laid out as horizontal lanes or vertical columns. Turn on Sort by date and entries sit on a shared, proportional date axis. It runs entirely in your browser, saves your work locally, and works offline.
How to use Timeline maker
- Add your tracks — Each track is its own timeline — name it, pick a colour, and use + Add track for more (for example Events, People and Equipment).
- Enter the events — In Rows mode fill in a date and label per entry, or switch to Markup mode and type one line per event as time | label, such as 09:14 | Alarm raised.
- Choose the layout — Pick Horizontal or Vertical, and tick Sort by date to place entries on a proportional date axis instead of file order.
- Reorder and edit — Drag the handles to reorder entries or whole tracks, and click any entry on the timeline to edit its date and label inline.
- Export — Download the finished timeline as a PNG image, an SVG vector, or a PDF document from the header.
Frequently asked questions
What date formats can I use?
Times like 09:14, full dates like 2024-03-01, and looser forms like Mar 2025 are all understood and placed on the date axis.
What's the difference between Rows and Markup mode?
Rows gives you draggable structured fields for each entry; Markup lets you type the whole track as free text, one event per line. You can switch between them at any time.
Can I show several timelines at once?
Yes. Each track renders as its own independent timeline, stacked as lanes (horizontal) or side-by-side columns (vertical) — useful for comparing events, people and equipment in an incident review.
Is my work saved?
Yes. Everything persists in your browser's local storage, so your tracks are still there when you return. Nothing is uploaded.
Which export should I pick for printing?
Choose SVG so the timeline stays sharp at any size, or PDF for a ready-to-print page. PNG is best for screens and documents.
Tips
- Turn on Sort by date to space events proportionally; dragging an entry switches that track to manual order.
- Give each track a distinct colour so overlapping timelines are easy to tell apart.
- Export SVG for crisp printing or embedding; use PNG for slides and quick sharing.
- Click straight onto an entry in the preview to edit it without scrolling back to the form.
