Fuel cost calculator
Work out what a car journey costs in fuel — one way or return, split between passengers — from the distance, your fuel economy (L/100 km, km/L or US/UK MPG) and the pump price. Also shows how far a budget or a full tank will take you and what a daily commute costs each month. Fully offline.
Open Fuel cost calculator →What is the fuel cost calculator?
A private calculator for what a car journey costs in fuel. Enter your fuel economy in L/100 km, km/L, US MPG or UK MPG, the pump price per litre or per gallon, and the distance — it shows the fuel used, the total cost, the cost per kilometre or mile and each passenger's share. It also works backwards to show how far a budget or a full tank will take you, and estimates a regular commute per week, month and year. Everything runs in your browser and works offline.
How to use Fuel cost calculator
- Describe the car and the fuel — Enter the fuel economy and choose its unit, then the fuel price and whether it is per litre, per US gallon or per UK gallon. Type any currency symbol you like. The strip underneath shows the same economy in all four units.
- Cost a trip — On Trip cost, enter the distance in kilometres or miles, choose One way or Round trip, and say how many people are sharing the cost.
- Work backwards — On Budget and range, enter an amount of money to see how far it gets you, or your tank size to see the range on a full tank and what it costs to fill.
- Estimate a commute — On Commute, enter the distance you drive each day and how many days a week to see the fuel and cost per week, month and year. Use the copy button to copy a summary.
Frequently asked questions
Why are US and UK MPG different?
A US gallon is 3.785411784 litres but a UK (imperial) gallon is 4.54609 litres, so the same car does more miles per UK gallon. For example, 30 MPG (US) is about 7.84 L/100 km while 30 MPG (UK) is about 9.42 L/100 km.
Does a round trip just double the distance?
Yes. Round trip doubles the distance you enter, and with it the fuel and the cost. The per-kilometre or per-mile cost stays the same.
How is a month or a year worked out for the commute?
The weekly figure is the daily distance multiplied by the driving days per week. A year is 365.25 days (about 52.18 weeks) and a month is a twelfth of a year.
Is anything sent online?
No. All the maths happens in your browser and your last inputs are saved only on your device, so it works offline.
Tips
- Use your car's real-world consumption from a few fill-ups rather than the brochure figure for a more honest estimate.
- If the price is shown per gallon at the pump, pick the matching gallon so the conversion is exact.
- Splitting the cost only divides the fuel — add tolls or parking separately if you are sharing those too.
