How to use Discount, markup & margin calculator
- Pick a mode — Choose Discount, Markup or Margin from the segmented buttons at the top of the form.
- Choose a currency — Select a currency symbol from the dropdown — dollar, euro, pound, manat and more, or no symbol at all.
- Enter your numbers — For a discount, type the original price and the discount percentage; for markup, the cost price and markup percentage; for margin, the cost and selling price.
- Read the result — The headline figure and a full breakdown update instantly — sale price and savings, selling price and profit, or the profit margin and markup.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between markup and margin?
Markup is the profit measured against the cost price, while margin is the profit measured against the selling price. The Markup mode shows both so you can compare them side by side.
How do I work out a sale price?
Use Discount mode: enter the original price and the discount percentage, and it shows the sale price, how much you save, and what you actually pay.
Are my figures saved or sent anywhere?
Your entries are saved only on your own device so they are still there next time, and nothing is uploaded — the calculation runs entirely in your browser.
Can I change the currency symbol?
Yes. Pick any of the listed currencies from the dropdown, or choose No symbol if you only want the numbers.
Tips
- Switch to Margin mode when you know the cost and the price and want to see how profitable a sale really is.
- Markup and margin are not the same — a 50% markup is only a 33% margin, so check both before setting a price.
- Choose No symbol when you are copying figures into a spreadsheet that adds its own formatting.
