A free, private tool that turns a clip from a local video into a looping animated GIF. Trim the start and end, choose the frame rate and width, and add an optional caption. Frames are captured from the video and encoded right in your browser, so nothing is ever uploaded and it works offline.
How to use Video to GIF
- Load a video — Choose a local video file from your device — it stays on your machine and is never uploaded.
- Trim the clip — Drag the Start and End sliders, or use the Start = now and End = now buttons, to set the portion you want.
- Set frame rate and width — Pick a frame rate from 8 to 20 fps and a width of 240, 320 or 480 px (or the original up to 640 px).
- Add a caption and create — Optionally type a caption and choose its position, then click Create GIF to encode and download the looping result.
Frequently asked questions
Is my video uploaded to a server?
No. The clip is read locally and every frame is captured and encoded in your browser, so the video never leaves your device.
What frame rates can I choose?
You can pick 8, 10, 12, 15 or 20 frames per second — higher rates look smoother but make a larger file.
What sizes are available?
You can output at 240, 320 or 480 px wide, or keep the original size up to 640 px.
Why is my GIF a large file?
GIFs grow with length, frame rate and size. To keep the file smaller, trim a shorter clip, use a lower frame rate, or pick a narrower width.
Tips
- Keep clips short — a few seconds usually makes the most shareable GIF.
- Drop the frame rate to 8 or 10 fps and the width to 240 or 320 px to shrink the file size.
- Use the Start = now and End = now buttons while the video is paused to set precise trim points.
